<text>Eileen B. Brookman served her community as an assemblywoman, activist, and businesswoman. She was involved with the American Business Women’s Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Women’s Democratic Club, while working for issues such as the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), Native American rights, and senior citizen rights.

Eileen Milstein was born in Denver, Colorado, on October 25, 1921. She married George Brookman on July 11, 1941 and the couple moved to Las Vegas after having two children together. Brookman entered Nevada state politics in 1962 when Governor Grant Sawyer appointed her as the Indian Commissioner. She became a Nevada State Assemblywoman in 1965 and served until 1977.

Due to her short stature (4’10”), Brookman wore orange everyday to make her visible in the legislature. This color became her signature, adorning campaign materials and became a recognizable color in District 9 even after she was no longer in office. She ended her voluntary retirement from the legislature by winning election to her seventh term in 1986 and was reelected in 1988.

During her 16 years in the legislature, Brookman served on the Government Affairs Committee, Health and Welfare Committee, and Education Committee, and was the vice-chairman of the Legislative Functions Committee. She also served as vice-chairman of the Assembly Waysand Means Committee. Brookman was a consistent supporter of legislation to establish and improve senior citizen programs, handicap programs, and juvenile justice services. Brookman sponsored the Older Americans Act that brought necessary funding to Nevada for senior citizen benefits, including the creation of the State Division of Aging Services and the “Meals on Wheels” program. During the 1975 Legislative Session she introduced a bill to eliminate pay toilets, which then became a national issue. Women shouldered the majority of pay toilet fees as men used stalls much less frequently.

Brookman was recognized for her dedication to individual rights and her commitment to her community. She was named Humanitarian Mother of the Year for Clark County in 1974, Woman of the Year by the City of Hope and was chairman of the Nevada delegation to the White House Conference on Aging in 1982. As a result of that position, Brookman was appointed to the Nevada Commission on Aging. She was awarded the Nevada Distinguished Citizen Award from the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada in 1982, and was appointed to the State Taxicab Authority the same year.

Brookman died of cancer on July 1, 2004</text>

<text>In 1953 Lucille Bryant travelled to Las Vegas by car from Tallulah, Louisiana to seek the higher wages and better working conditions. She made the Westside of Las Vegas her home and worked in several casinos. She retired from the Stardust after working there for 31 years.

Lucille Bryant’s paternal grandmother raised her following her mother’s death. Her father joined the service during World War II, and after he returned to the United States, he moved west, eventually settling in Palmdale, California, leaving Lucille and her siblings in Louisiana. Lucille married at the age of sixteen, worked as a domestic for white families in Tallulah, and spent her summers working in cotton fields.

Bryant’s husband moved to Las Vegas first, and she joined him six months later. In Las Vegas, they settled on the Westside, joining other relatives and neighbors from Tallulah who had immigrated to the area earlier. She got a job on her first day in Las Vegas, working as a maid at the Algiers Hotel. She went on to work at the Silver Slipper and the Sands. Bryant later began working in the uniform room at the Las Vegas Sands, where she worked for 31 ones years. She also became active in the Culinary Union.

She raised her children in Las Vegas and was active in their educations. She also furthered her own education after they grew, and earned her degree. Bryant was active in her church.

The interview describes Bryant’s experiences working in Las Vegas hotels, the community of the Westside, and the education of her children</text>

She ran for statewide office in 1994 and voters elected her to the first of nine sessions in the Nevada Assembly. There she worked to protect the rights of renters and homeowners, advocated for women and children, and reformed the education system in Nevada by helping to implement full-day kindergarten. She was elected Majority Floor Leader by her fellow Democrats in the 2001, 2003, and 2005 sessions. In 2007, she was elected to be Speaker of the Assembly, the first woman to hold that role.

She has continued to work at the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and since 1996 has been the executive director. She has received many awards from the community including Democrat of the Year (2003), Assemblywoman of the Year (2007) UNLV Alumni of the Year (2007), and Legislator of the Decade. In her work at the Legal Aid Center, she developed partnerships with UNLV Boyd School of Law to train first year law students how to teach legal classes to the public, as well as a Domestic Violence Project and a Children’s Attorneys Project.</text>

<text>Betty Bunch began dancing professionally as a college student while earning her degree in dance from the University of Texas. She soon began working with the Moro-Landis dancers and made her home in Los Angeles. She danced in the evenings, and worked on movies during the day.

In 1956, Bunch landed her first job in Las Vegas at the Sahara Hotel as part of the opening line for Donald O’Connor. After that show closed, she returned to Los Angeles, where she made her permanent home. She went on the road with Louis Prima and other shows.

After one show closed, Bunch came to Las Vegas to vacation. While waiting for her ride back to Los Angeles in a coffee shop, she was offered a position at a show in Las Vegas, and she decided to move permanently to Las Vegas.

She continued to dance, sing, and do comedy until after the birth of her second child. At that time, she retired from the Las Vegas showroom, but not from show business. She continues to be involved in the entertainment industry in Las Vegas.</text>

<text>Florence Lee Jones Cahlan was a journalist, civic leader, and historian who contributed to Las Vegas at mid-century by writing about and preserving the region’s history. Born in 1910 in Missouri, Florence Lee Jones spent her youth in Missouri, California, and the Dutch East Indies as her father worked for the Dutch Shell Company. She attended the University of Missouri and graduated with a degree in journalism in 1933. Jones moved to Las Vegas following her graduation and worked as a cub reporter for the fledgling newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal. She was the first professional woman journalist on staff and the Associated Press correspondent at the paper. Jones became a permanent reporter at the paper and was mentored by John Cahlan who, with his brother Al, was instrumental in the growth of the Review-Journal. In 1940, Jones married her mentor John Cahlan. The couple shared not only a love for journalism, but had mutual interests in civic activities, promoting Las Vegas, and learning and telling the local history. Jones Cahlan also involved herself in community. She was a charter member of the Service League and a board member at both the Clark County American Red Cross and the United Fund. She also worked to improve the lives of the blind and handicapped. She joined the Jaycees despite a national rule barring women from membership. Her love of Las Vegas and its history was reflected in her newspaper column on early Las Vegas life and her work establishing the Southern Nevada branch of the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society. She wrote several articles and books on the history and growth of Las Vegas. She also collaborated with her husband on the book, Water: A History of Las Vegas (1975). The honors awarded her include being named one of the ten most influential women by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and being named Woman of the Year. She passed away in 1985</text>

<text>When Helen Cannon graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she began working as a teacher. However, she saved all her extra money to pay for flying lessons. She soon realized that flying was her passion, and she took a job at a local airport in South Dakota in order to get more flying time.

During World War II, she enlisted in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs). Only around 1000 women were allowed to serve in this capacity, and Cannon was very conscious at the time of the gender discrimination women pilots faced. She never complained though, out of a sense of patriotism and because she treasured her time as a pilot regardless of the circumstances. While serving as a test pilot at Luke Field Air Base in Arizona, Helen met her husband, Bob. They were married in Los Angeles in 1946 and moved to Las Vegas shortly afterwards.

Cannon was a community leader in Las Vegas for over sixty years. She was involved in numerous local service organizations, including the Junior League, the United Fund, and the PTA. She was also very invested in local education, serving as clerk, vice president, and then president of the Clark County School Board and president of the Nevada State School Board Association. While serving on the School Board, she oversaw the creation of the free school lunch program, the Southern Nevada Vocational School, and KLVX-TV, the local public access station.

Throughout her life, she maintained an interest in her early passion, flight. In 1961, she flew in the women’s coast-to-coast air race known as the Powder Puff Derby. After a local middle school was named in her honor in 1976, she taught a principles of flight class to its students.</text>

<text>Hatty Canty came to Las Vegas with little formal education but was able to become an important community leader and the president of the Culinary Worker’s Union. She worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for all the workers of Las Vegas. Hatty Canty’s life has been filled with challenges. Born in Alabama in 1934, she married soon after high school and had two children. She moved from Alabama to San Diego to find better opportunities for herself and children after her marriage broke up. In California, she worked as a housekeeper and cook. Canty then remarried and moved with her new husband to Las Vegas in 1961 who found work with the local garbage disposal company. Canty stayed home with their family to care for ten children. Canty returned to the job market in 1972 and began to work as a maid at the Thunderbird Hotel. She quit her job when her husband took ill to care for him until his death. After her husband died, Canty attempted to find a job that would allow her to support and care for her children. She believed she found that as a janitor for the Clark County School District. Difficulties with scheduling forced her to leave the school district and she began to work in private homes as a maid. This was easier on her schedule, but she lacked the benefits she needed for herself and her children. She applied to work at the new Maxim Hotel. She was hired and began working as a maid and later as a uniform attendant. While working at the Maxim, she became involved with the Culinary Workers Union demanding rights for herself and other workers. Canty and others picketed casinos that were non-union and engaged in other activities to increase awareness of the union. In 1984, she was elected to the executive board of the Union and ran for president in 1990, a position she held throughout the 1990s. Canty championed worker’s rights so that workers received a living wage and enjoyed a quality standard of life.</text>
