<text>Essie Shelton Jacobs followed all of her siblings to Las Vegas from Fordyce, Arkansas. Her husband moved first, with the plan of the then-pregnant Essie to wait until she gave birth to make the four-day trip by car to Las Vegas. She could not wait and arranged her own transportation, surprising her husband in Las Vegas.

She soon went to work at the Tally-Ho casino. Later, when it was rebuilt into the Aladdin Hotel she continued to work there, spending twenty-three years in housekeeping there. She became a supervisor and shop steward for the Culinary Union Local 226.

She raised her eight children as a single parent after the murder of her husband, relying on the Westside community, her church, and family for help.

In her interview, she describes the development of the Culinary Union, its leadership, and where she sees it going. She also talks about the nightlife of the Westside and the development of the Las Vegas Strip.</text>

<text>Bernice Jaeger was one of the first women in Las Vegas to penetrate the then male-dominated field of hotel administration. When Bernice started working at the Riviera in 1973, women represented only about one-tenth of Las Vegas hotel administrators across the board. Executives like Inez Rambeau, Bernice’s first mentor, encouraged young women in their goals to attain executive positions.

Bernice Jaeger was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 27, 1934. Bernice graduated from high school, but left college early to marry Ivan Jaeger on June 20, 1955. Ivan Jaeger and his family were involved in the so-called underground gaming industry in the Midwest. When the Midwest gaming industry shut down in 1961, he and Bernice relocated their growing family to Las Vegas.

Bernice earned a degree in hotel administration in 1974 from Clark County Community College. Soon after, Inez Rambeau hired Bernice as her secretary at the Riviera. Over the following years, Bernice worked with a number of prominent hotel directors, including Dick Chappell at the Riviera and Ed Torres at the Aladdin Hotel and Casino. In 1985, Bernice met Ira Levy, the new owner of the Continental Hotel and Casino. Impressed by her background and knowledge of the hotel industry, Levy hired Bernice immediately as his assistant general manager, a position she held for twelve years.

Bernice later earned a master’s degree in counseling at UNLV in 2003. Bernice now works for Legal Rehabilitation Services, leading court-mandated group counseling for people in domestic violence situations. In 1981, Bernice was rewarded for her efforts when she received the Clark County Working Mother of the Year award. She was honored again in 1995 with her inclusion in Distinguished Women of Southern Nevada.</text>

<text>Jeanne Russell Janish is best known as a botanical illustrator and the first woman to graduate from Stanford with a master’s in geology. Her illustrations are found in many books that have helped hikers and campers identify wild foliage.

Jeanne Russell was born on October 20, 1902 in Marshall, Iowa. Her early years were spent in St. Louis, where her father was a Presbyterian Minister. Later the family moved to Berkeley, California. Janish attended Vassar College, her mother’s alma mater, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a major in Latin and a minor in geology in 1924. The same year, she began to attend Stanford. In 1926, Janish became the first woman to graduate Stanford with a master of arts in geology.

Janish held a natural talent for drawing that was nurtured during her childhood and teen years by botanical illustrator and botanist Edith Clements and her husband Frederic E. Clements of the Carnegie Institution. Stanford paleontologist James Perrin Smith also noticed Janish’s creative abilities and encouraged her to study scientific illustration. Her career led her to illustrate approximately thirty-two major scientific and popular books, as well as many articles. Her artwork can be found not only in scientific publications, but also in field guide books for plants in the Mojave region.

In 1929, Janish left for China to work as a rug designer for her cousin at the Fette Rug Company in Beijing. During her five years there, Janish had many wonderful experiences, which are recorded in her diaries. She also met and married her lifelong companion, Carl R. Janish. In 1934, the couple returned to the United States due to the onset of war with Japan. Employment was scarce in the U.S. when they returned, so the Janishes operated Camp Wasibo in the Sierras for Campfire Girls. They remained in California for seven years where Jeanne taught at Stanford and did some freelance illustrating. After several moves around the country in the forties and early fifties, the couple settled in Carson City, Nevada. In 1954, they moved to Las Vegas where Carl worked as a contractor at the Nevada Test Site. While in Las Vegas, Janish pursued her career as an illustrator and began to focus on local botany.

Jeanne Russell Janish died in Las Vegas on February 4, 1998.</text>

<text>Lubertha Johnson was a fundamental contributor in the fight for racial equality in Las Vegas. She was an active member and leader in the Las Vegas National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and fought to enact Nevada’s civil rights law. She was also active in several community service organizations and was the founder of Operation Independence, the Clark County’s first anti-poverty, self-help initiative.

She was born in 1906 on a farm in Mississippi and spent most of her early years living with her grandmother as her parents tried to get ahead. After race relations became extremely harsh in the south, the seventeen-year-old Johnson moved to Chicago with her family. There she attended the Chicago Music College. After high school, she enrolled in an all black school, Roger Williams University in Nashville, where she had planned to pursue a teaching career. The Depression of the 1930s forced Johnson to quit school and move back to Chicago in order to help support her family. In 1943, she moved to Las Vegas with her family where they purchased a chicken ranch.

Johnson began her work in Las Vegas as recreation director for the Carver Park Housing Project. In 1954, she became the first black nurse in Southern Nevada when she was hired, although reluctantly, at the Southern Nevada Hospital (now UMC).

Johnson’s greatest achievements in the state came with her activity in several community service organizations. In 1945 she became active with the Las Vegas chapter of the NAACP and eventually served two separate terms as president of the organization. Her accomplishments with the NAACP included signing the Consent Decree to end employment discrimination, fighting for Nevada’s civil rights law and enacting open housing legislation. She was also a member of the Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, The National Conference and a board member of the Caliente School for Girls. Johnson founded Operation Independence, a program that created many significant changes in the West Las Vegas community, including the opening of child development centers, the first Head Start program, and the Manpower program. Operation Independence was also successful in receiving funds from the United Way of Southern Nevada; the first black non-profit in Southern Nevada to do so.

Lubertha Johnson continued working for equal rights in Nevada until her death on February 6, 1989 in a Las Vegas nursing home.</text>

<text>Viola Johnson, along with her baby daughter, left Fordyce, Arkansas in 1942 to join her parents in Las Vegas. Before coming to Las Vegas, Viola worked chopping cotton in Arkansas. Her mother was then working at the El Rancho Hotel as a maid, and her father worked at the Basic Magnesium plant in Henderson. After moving to Las Vegas, the family all lived together in a tent on Jackson Street in the Westside.

In 1943, Johnson married and she and her husband moved to a small house on Jackson Street. Soon after her marriage, she went to work at the Flamingo Hotel as a maid. She later left that position, and began working in the pantry at the Rivera. She eventually went to the International (now the Las Vegas Hilton) and worked in the pantry there, retiring after fourteen years.

She was very active in her church, singing in the choir, and teaching Sunday school. She passed away in 2004.

<text>In 1992, Las Vegas voters elected Jan Jones the first female mayor of the city by a wide margin and won reelection the following term. While mayor, Jones excelled at coalition building and led the city during a period of tremendous growth. Her influence went beyond the mayor’s office, as she served as a mentor to numerous women in the fields of politics and business.

Jan Lyle Laverty grew up in southern California and graduated from the Marlborough School for Girls in Santa Monica in 1967. She went to Europe briefly after high school, but returned to the United Stated and attended Stanford University where she earned a degree in Psychology and English. While in school she worked as a cocktail waitress, moving through the ranks into management for the restaurant, a position she held for ten years. She later went to work for her father’s grocery company, Thriftimart, and appeared in commercials for the business.

After rekindling her high school romance with Fletcher Jones, she married him and together they started a family. She eventually became president of Fletcher Jones management, overseeing operations of the automobile dealerships in California and Nevada.

In 1990, Jan was appointed to the Governor’s Executive Committee on Women. In 1992, she ran for Mayor of Las Vegas on a platform of teamwork and planning, easily winning the office. She served as mayor until 1999, a period of unprecedented growth for the city, including the development of the Fremont Street Experience and the Regional Justice Center. Jones also developed many public/private partnerships in the city, making it one of the best places to do business according to Fortune magazine.

Jones currently holds the title of Senior Vice President of Communications and Government Relations for Caesars Entertainment. She oversees the government affairs of the global company, corporate communications, community relations, and corporate-social responsibility programs. She has developed a number of initiatives aimed at enhancing diversity and promoting environmental stewardship corporation-wide. She has also been proactive in supporting women in the gaming industry and is on the steering committee for the American Gaming Association's recently formed Global Gaming Women initiative. As a key figure in the industry, Jones received the association's 2011 lifetime achievement award for gaming contributions.

She is also a member of various community boards and organizations, including the Nevada Public Radio and the Women’s Campaign Fund. She also serves as a director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Women's Campaign Fund in Washington D.C. She is also a member of the Women's Leadership Board at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She is married to Dana Blackhurst, an education professional.</text>

<text>Edythe Katz-Yarchever came to Las Vegas in 1951 with her first husband Lloyd to manage local movie theaters leased by her family. They made waves in the city by desegregating the theaters and allowing African Americans to sit with whites. Edythe has committed her life to bettering the city of Las Vegas and established the Library for Holocaust Studies.

Edythe was born to Gertrude and Hyman Sperling in 1920. After living in Hawaii and Colorado, she moved to California in 1947 where she he met Lloyd Katz. They married in 1948. The couple moved to Las Vegas in 1951 and took over management of the Fremont, Huntridge, and Palace movie theaters. They rejected the earlier policy of segregating blacks to separate seating areas.

Once they settled in Las Vegas, Edythe became active in the community. She volunteered at local schools to help under-privileged students get tutoring. She was active in the local Jewish community. In 1976 with seed money from her mother, she founded the Library for Holocaust Studies. She also served on the Governor’s Advisory Council on Education Relating to the Holocaust.

In 1986, Lloyd Katz passed away. The Clark County School District honored their dedication to the community when they named an elementary school in their honor.

Edythe Katz married Gilbert Yarchever, an administrative law judge in 1999. He passed away in 2010. Edythe Katz-Yarchever continues to live in southern Nevada.</text>

<text>Mary Kaaihue was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a family that could trace their lineage to the Hawaiian royal family. Her father, Johnny “Ukulele” Kaaihue had a band, and by the time she was twelve years old Mary began playing the guitar in the group. She and her brother Norm, along with Frank Ross formed the Mary Kaaihue Trio. In 1948, they changed the name to the Mary Kaye Trio.

The group became well known and Mary became one of the first women to play the electric guitar. In the early 1950s, they came to Las Vegas to perform and became one of the earliest lounge acts in the city. They played in a lounge at the Frontier Hotel throughout the 1950s and helped pave the way for future Las Vegas lounge acts like Louis Prima and Keely Smith. The group recorded more than a dozen albums and starred in a film. In 1966, the group broke up citing exhaustion.

Mary Kaye continued to perform as a solo artist. She lived in Las Vegas until her death in 2007. She remains remembered for her skill on the guitar, with Fender even naming a guitar in her honor.</text>

<text>Anna Dean Kepper had a passion for preserving the history of southern Nevada. As curator of UNLV’s Special Collections, she convinced area pioneers to donate their photos and papers. As an oral historian, she made sure that individuals’ stories would be preserved. And as the founder of the historic preservation effort in southern Nevada, she is given credit for saving the Las Vegas Mormon Fort as well as founding families’ homes.

Anna Dean Nohl was born May 12, 1938 in Seattle, Washington. She received two master’s degrees in New York State and then moved to Las Vegas in 1973 with her husband, Jack Kepper, a geology professor. At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), Kepper was active in university affairs through service on committees such as budget and planning, procedures and policy, public relations, museum of natural history, and beautification, in addition to her work for UNLV Special Collections. She was the curator of Special Collections from 1975 until her death in 1983.

Kepper was equally as devoted to historic preservation outside of the university. She held numerous memberships in historic organizations, such as the Preservation Association of Clark County, the Southern Nevada Historical Society, Boulder City Museum and Historical Association, Nevada Historical Society, and the Nevada State Library Association. She was also active in the American Association for State and Local History, Intermountain Archivists, Society of California Archivists, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, where she served as Nevada’s representative.

In 1974, Kepper founded the Association of the Preservation of the Las Vegas Mormon Fort, which later became the Preservation Association of Clark County, serving as president from 1974-1979. Also, Kepper was a moving force in the relocation of historic downtown homes. Kepper coordinated Houssels House’s relocation to the UNLV campus for adaptive use as architectural studies classrooms. As advisor to the Junior League, Kepper aided in the restoration of pioneer businessman Will Beckley’s house at the Museum of Southern Nevada.

In 1980, Kepper was recognized for her hard work as the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Nevada Historical Preservation Conference. In 1982, she received the Certificate of Merit from the Southern Nevada Historical Society. Kepper was also honored by the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association for helping Boulder City gain entrance to the National Register as a historic site.

Kepper died of cancer at fifty on December 20, 1983. UNLV posthumously awarded Kepper a Master’s of Public Administration for which she had passed her final comprehensive examination eighteen days prior to her death.</text>
