<text><span>Caryll Dziedziak was born in the middle of a snowstorm in Buffalo, New York. Over the years, she slowly migrated away from the northeast and ended up in the Southwest in 1986. She loves all the outdoor adventures available in this climate and enjoys hiking, running, golf – or anything that gets her outdoors.</span><br /><br /><span>Her first career choice was nursing. Before moving West, she worked as a pediatric nurse, but knew that it was not her life’s ambition. During this time, she and her husband began raising their three sons.</span><br /><br /><span>After arriving in Las Vegas in 1991, she returned to college and completed degrees in both History and Women’s Studies at UNLV. Nevada has provided her with many opportunities. She has enjoyed teaching the introductory Women’s Studies course at UNLV and has been active in several statewide women’s organizations.</span><br /><br /><span>In 1999, she helped co-found the Women’s Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN). Over the years, it has been exciting to experience the transition of a vision into a reality. In 2008, she resigned from WRIN in order to complete her Ph.D. She has remained very involved since, often leading the "Women's History" workshop for NEW Leadership Nevada and assisting with events.</span><br /><br /><span>She graduated with her Ph.D. in History from UNLV. Her dissertation, entitled&nbsp;</span><a href="http://digitalscholarship.unlv.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1672&amp;context=thesesdissertations"><em>"The Gendering of Nevada politics: The ERA Ratification Campaign, 1973-1981."</em></a><span>&nbsp;discusses the political and social climate in Nevada during a heated time in the state’s history.</span></text>

<text>Dorothy Eisenberg’s long-term commitment to the Las Vegas community is evident in her work to improve education in Las Vegas, and her dedication to the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas and the Clark County Democratic Party.

Eisenberg was born in 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. As a child, she and her family moved to Philadelphia. She graduated from high school in 1946 and two years later married Ralph Weinstein, a businessman, and together they had four daughters. In 1960, her husband passed away in an airplane crash. After his death, she decided to get a college degree from Temple University in Philadelphia while raising her four daughters. Eisenberg received her bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 1964. She met and married her second husband, Paul Eisenberg, a certified public accountant, while in school.

The new family, consisting now of five daughters, moved to Las Vegas in 1964. Once in Las Vegas, Eisenberg opted to stay home and raise the children. However, she quickly became active with the newly formed Las Vegas League of Women Voters (LV-LWV). She served as president of the chapter from 1971-1973. During her time with the LV-LWV, the organization coordinated with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in a lawsuit to desegregate the Clark County schools. Eisenberg worked with the parents of school children to come up with a plan to guarantee equality in education. In 1972, Sixth Grade Centers were created in West Las Vegas, where West Las Vegas sixth-graders were bussed out to other valley schools and those children were bussed into the centers. The controversial plan enraged members of the white community and the Eisenberg family received personal threats.

Eisenberg’s persistent dedication to education continues today, as she raises money for local schools through the Clark County Public Education Foundation. In 1991, a public school was named in her honor.

Eisenberg is also a prominent member of the Las Vegas Jewish community. She was the first female president of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, which provides a voice for the Jewish community and helps various local Jewish organizations.

In addition, Eisenberg is committed to the Clark County Democratic Party. She has served as the president of the Women’s Democratic Club of Clark County, working to see qualified candidates win seats in elections.

Dorothy Eisenberg is an asset to the Las Vegas community, as exemplified through her hard work and commitment to public education and activism.</text>

<text>Lilly Fong was the first Chinese-American elementary school teacher in the city and was the first Chinese-American to sit on the Nevada State Board of Regents. She worked tirelessly for education during her 52 years in Las Vegas. She and her husband, Wing Fong, built Las Vegas businesses.

Lilly Fong was born in Superior, Arizona in 1925. She received an education degree from Arizona State University. In 1950, she relocated to Las Vegas to teach and became the first Asian-American elementary school teacher in the valley. She married Wing Fong, a local businessman, and they opened the well-known Fong’s Garden restaurant on East Charleston Boulevard while working in real estate.

Fong was active in the local branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She took an active interest in the state of education in the city and worked to support UNLV in its early days. She and her husband raised money for the UNLV Performing Arts Center in late 1960s.

Lilly Fong’s dedication to education led her to run for the Board of Regents. She served as a regent from 1974 until 1984. As a regent, Fong worked to identify alternative sources of funding for higher education. She also worked to promote the development of UNLV to keep pace with the rapid growth of Las Vegas. Following her narrow defeat for the Board of Regents in 1984, Fong continued to work to improve educational opportunities, teaching part-time on the college level. She also worked to establish an endowment fund for a Chinese language program at UNLV. UNLV honored Fong’s contributions by naming the geosciences building for her in 1985. She was named a Distinguished Nevadan in 1998 with her husband.

Lilly Fong passed away in 2002, but left a legacy on Las Vegas’ educational system.</text>

<text>Jean Ford’s reputation transcends party lines and politics to all concerned with the quality of life in Nevada. Born Imogene Young on December 28, 1929, Ford crossed the states of Oklahoma and Missouri to Texas in her early years. She received her B.A. in sociology from Southern Methodist University in 1951. Ford served as a recreational therapist at various military hospitals until marrying Samuel Ford in 1955. In 1962, the Fords moved to Las Vegas, where she spent the next several years involved in the care and activities of their two daughters, Janet and Carla. This however did not keep Ford from immersing herself in community activism.

In 1964 and 1965, she chaired the Ad Hoc Library Committee, bringing about the creation of the Clark County Library district. Recognizing her leadership potential, Governor Paul Laxalt appointed Ford to the Nevada State Park Commission in 1967. On the commission she lobbied for state park budget increases and organized public support for a successful $5 million bond in the 1970 ballot. Ford continued her involvement with statewide issues and organizations while setting the stage for her political debut.

Officially entering the political arena in 1972, Ford served two terms as a Republican in the State Assembly. Defeated in her 1976 bid for Senate, she nonetheless returned in 1978 and campaigned successfully for a Senate seat as a Democrat. During her time in the Nevada Legislature, Ford concerned herself with issues of the environment, education, and women’s rights, including the Equal Rights Amendment.

While keeping involved in statewide politics, Ford turned her attention to business pursuits and opened her own tourism company. After a term as director of the state Office of Community Services, she moved to academia where she served as director of the Women’s Studies Program at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Ford was a self-trained historian yet played an enormous role in preserving the history of women’s accomplishments in the state. She began the Nevada Women’s Archives in collaboration with the University of Nevada Reno. She also founded the Nevada Women’s History Project, a state-wide volunteer organization that preserves the contributions of women in our state.

Diagnosed with inoperable cancer in 1997, Ford hastened to finish projects and commitments, including narrating her own oral history—a wealth of Nevada history in itself. Friends and acquaintances poignantly note that the anniversary of Ford’s death, August 26th, is also the anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in our country and the celebration of Women’s Equality Day worldwide—a fitting tribute to one of Nevada’s finest.</text>

<text>The challenge of new experiences motivated Maude Frazier. It led her to attend college over her father’s objections. It brought her west as a young woman to teach in small Nevada towns. It motivated her to seek greater responsibilities as an educator, school supervisor, and a state legislator. Frazier looked at the wide and empty spaces in Nevada and saw opportunities to expand education for southern Nevadans.

Frazier grew up in a farming family in rural Wisconsin and taught in a mining camp in the state. But in 1906, stories of teaching opportunities in the West led her to a job in Genoa, Nevada, teaching in a two-room schoolhouse and to other small schools across the state. Her diverse experiences served as her best reference for the position of Deputy State Superintendent of Schools in 1921. She said of her selection over several competitors, “I was well aware that when a woman takes over work done by a man, she has to do it better, has more of it to do, and usually for less pay.” Her region comprised about one-third of the state and had few developed roads. Frazier recruited and supervised teachers for the remote schools. She coordinated sixty-three different school districts and helped them develop school budgets and revenues.

The challenges of school financing and enormous growth were part of Frazier’s next job as Las Vegas Superintendent of Schools. From 1927 until leaving the job in 1946, Frazier took the lead to build new schools, secure public funds, and promote the idea of revenue equalization for children in the southern part of the state. Frustrated with the obstacles she witnessed, Frazier ran for the State Assembly and won her second campaign in 1950. She served twelve years during which time she shepherded legislation that reorganized the fragmented state school system and raised attention to the need for a junior college in southern Nevada. She secured state funds and matched them with private donations to build the first buildings. The school, later renamed the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, honored her by naming its first building after her.

Frazier continued to break new trails right up to her death. At the age of 81, Governor Grant Sawyer appointed her interim lieutenant governor in 1962, the highest state-level position ever held by a woman in Nevada.</text>

Her maternal grandparents, George Rammelkamp and Anna Dougherty, were among the earliest residents of northern Nevada, settling first in Dayton and later Yerington. Clara taught in Yerington for a number of years before marrying Chase Masterson, a dentist.

Rachel was born in 1913 in Yerington. The eldest of three children, she continued the tradition of women’s learning and education that began with her mother’s generation. When she was in sixth grade, the family moved to Tonopah. They later moved to Las Vegas, along with the Garside and Ronzone families.

Rachel continued to teach until the birth of the couple’s first child, Marjorie. With the onset of World War II, Rachel was left to care for their young daughter as Al left for military service. Throughout the war years the couple were together whenever possible, and their son John was born in 1941. After the war, Al returned to Las Vegas and went to work for Nevada Power Company, and a second son, Bill, was born.

Rachel’s interest in education never flagged, and when her children entered college, she returned to teaching. Rachel Gibson passed away in 2004.

In this narrative, Rachel recounts the joys and trials of growing up. Filled with detail, her stories paint a vivid picture of life in the early twentieth-century West.</text>
