<text>Florence Lee Jones Cahlan was a journalist, civic leader, and historian who contributed to Las Vegas at mid-century by writing about and preserving the region’s history. Born in 1910 in Missouri, Florence Lee Jones spent her youth in Missouri, California, and the Dutch East Indies as her father worked for the Dutch Shell Company. She attended the University of Missouri and graduated with a degree in journalism in 1933. Jones moved to Las Vegas following her graduation and worked as a cub reporter for the fledgling newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal. She was the first professional woman journalist on staff and the Associated Press correspondent at the paper. Jones became a permanent reporter at the paper and was mentored by John Cahlan who, with his brother Al, was instrumental in the growth of the Review-Journal. In 1940, Jones married her mentor John Cahlan. The couple shared not only a love for journalism, but had mutual interests in civic activities, promoting Las Vegas, and learning and telling the local history. Jones Cahlan also involved herself in community. She was a charter member of the Service League and a board member at both the Clark County American Red Cross and the United Fund. She also worked to improve the lives of the blind and handicapped. She joined the Jaycees despite a national rule barring women from membership. Her love of Las Vegas and its history was reflected in her newspaper column on early Las Vegas life and her work establishing the Southern Nevada branch of the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society. She wrote several articles and books on the history and growth of Las Vegas. She also collaborated with her husband on the book, Water: A History of Las Vegas (1975). The honors awarded her include being named one of the ten most influential women by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and being named Woman of the Year. She passed away in 1985</text>

<text>When Helen Cannon graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she began working as a teacher. However, she saved all her extra money to pay for flying lessons. She soon realized that flying was her passion, and she took a job at a local airport in South Dakota in order to get more flying time.

During World War II, she enlisted in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs). Only around 1000 women were allowed to serve in this capacity, and Cannon was very conscious at the time of the gender discrimination women pilots faced. She never complained though, out of a sense of patriotism and because she treasured her time as a pilot regardless of the circumstances. While serving as a test pilot at Luke Field Air Base in Arizona, Helen met her husband, Bob. They were married in Los Angeles in 1946 and moved to Las Vegas shortly afterwards.

Cannon was a community leader in Las Vegas for over sixty years. She was involved in numerous local service organizations, including the Junior League, the United Fund, and the PTA. She was also very invested in local education, serving as clerk, vice president, and then president of the Clark County School Board and president of the Nevada State School Board Association. While serving on the School Board, she oversaw the creation of the free school lunch program, the Southern Nevada Vocational School, and KLVX-TV, the local public access station.

Throughout her life, she maintained an interest in her early passion, flight. In 1961, she flew in the women’s coast-to-coast air race known as the Powder Puff Derby. After a local middle school was named in her honor in 1976, she taught a principles of flight class to its students.</text>

<text>Hatty Canty came to Las Vegas with little formal education but was able to become an important community leader and the president of the Culinary Worker’s Union. She worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for all the workers of Las Vegas. Hatty Canty’s life has been filled with challenges. Born in Alabama in 1934, she married soon after high school and had two children. She moved from Alabama to San Diego to find better opportunities for herself and children after her marriage broke up. In California, she worked as a housekeeper and cook. Canty then remarried and moved with her new husband to Las Vegas in 1961 who found work with the local garbage disposal company. Canty stayed home with their family to care for ten children. Canty returned to the job market in 1972 and began to work as a maid at the Thunderbird Hotel. She quit her job when her husband took ill to care for him until his death. After her husband died, Canty attempted to find a job that would allow her to support and care for her children. She believed she found that as a janitor for the Clark County School District. Difficulties with scheduling forced her to leave the school district and she began to work in private homes as a maid. This was easier on her schedule, but she lacked the benefits she needed for herself and her children. She applied to work at the new Maxim Hotel. She was hired and began working as a maid and later as a uniform attendant. While working at the Maxim, she became involved with the Culinary Workers Union demanding rights for herself and other workers. Canty and others picketed casinos that were non-union and engaged in other activities to increase awareness of the union. In 1984, she was elected to the executive board of the Union and ran for president in 1990, a position she held throughout the 1990s. Canty championed worker’s rights so that workers received a living wage and enjoyed a quality standard of life.</text>

<text>Toni Clark became emblematic of the glamour years of the early Las Vegas resorts with her attention to high fashion and her management of events for the wives of high rollers. In 1944, she came to Las Vegas with her husband Wilbur Clark who opened the Desert Inn Hotel and Casino in 1950. Over the years, Toni Clark became a fixture in Las Vegas society and an avid promoter of the Desert Inn specifically and Las Vegas in general.

Toni Clark was born Lena Gaglionese to Italian immigrant parents in 1915. Her father worked as a street cleaner in Seattle and she grew up surrounded by family. A reluctant student, she quit high school after three years. In 1941, Toni visited a friend in San Diego and decided to stay. She moved into the Barbara Worth hotel where Wilbur Clark ran a small club and his father operated the hotel. Wilbur Clark’s father suggested that Toni apply for a job at the restaurant and bar his son was opening, the Monte Carlo. She applied and was hired as a hostess. She began dating Wilbur Clark shortly thereafter and he gave her the name of Toni.

In 1944, Wilbur and Toni married in Reno. Soon after, Wilbur Clark purchased the El Rancho on the Las Vegas Strip and the newlyweds left San Diego for Las Vegas. Wilbur Clark owned several Las Vegas clubs, including the Monte Carlo downtown and the Player’s Club on the Strip. In 1950, he fulfilled a dream by completing the construction of the Desert Inn Hotel and Casino with his partners including Moe Dalitz. It was just the fifth major resort on the Strip.

Toni Clark did not work in the business side of the resort, but focused on the social aspects of the resort. She planned parties, entertained important guests, and hosted fashion shows at the hotel. After Wilbur Clark died in 1965, Toni remained a prominent member of Las Vegas society. She eventually married her long-time companion, Larry Finuf and together they worked to promote important causes of the city and hosted a number of charitable fundraisers. Toni Clark continued to live in Las Vegas until her death in 2006.</text>

<text>Rachel Coleman moved to Las Vegas in 1957 with her husband and six-month-old son. She quickly found work at the Tropicana. She became active with the local culinary union, and eventually became a union representative.

Before coming to Las Vegas, Coleman worked for a white family in Mississippi. Her brother-in-law migrated to Las Vegas, and Coleman and her husband soon followed. Her sister later followed in 1964.

After Coleman arrived in Las Vegas, she quickly found work as a glass washer at the Tropicana. She soon left that job and began working as a maid. She was later promoted to Inspectress over the other maids. In 1973, tired of maid work, she became a union representative in the local Culinary 226.

In 1987, she resigned from the Union and went to work for Jackie Gaughn at the Union Hotel & Casino.

The interview describes her life and community on the Westside, including the nightlife on Jackson Street. She also goes into detail about the Culinary Union, it management, and the changes it underwent during the 1960s-1980s.</text>

<text>D.D. (Dolores) Cotton began dancing professionally in high school. Her career brought her to Las Vegas in 1957 and she made the Westside her home until her death in 2009.

Cotton grew up in an African-American neighborhood in New York City known as Sugar Hill. Her neighbors included many prominent African-Americans including Joe Louis and Willie Mays. She began taking dance lessons by the age of five, and had her first professional jobs while in high school. She performed at the Apollo Theatre and travelled with her troupe in the United States and to Canada.

In 1957, Cotton came to Las Vegas to perform in the show the Cotton Club Review starring Cab Calloway. She quickly discovered the segregation of Las Vegas, as she and other black performers were not welcome in the casinos, except for to perform. She frequented the clubs of the Westside, and soon after her arrival, she met Elmer Cotton, whom she married later that year. After marriage, she retired from show business. Her husband’s family operated clubs on the Westside including the Town Tavern. Cotton began working at the clubs, working as keno writer.

After learning keno, Cotton began working as a cocktail waitress. She was later hired as the first African-American cocktail waitress downtown. She also was one of the original cocktail waitresses at Caesar’s Palace when it opened in 1966, becoming the first black cocktail waitress on the Las Vegas Strip.

In later years, Cotton trained to be a dealer. She worked as a dealer and was promoted to a floor supervisor at the Tropicana where she worked for many years.

The interview covers many aspects of entertainment and segregation in Las Vegas during the 1960s. Cotton recounts experiences she had with segregated Las Vegas. She also talks extensively about the development of the Westside.</text>
