<text>Living in Las Vegas since the 1940s, Lorraine Hunt has been an entertainer, businesswoman, a Clark County Commissioner, and the Lieutenant Governor of Nevada.

Lorraine Hunt was born in Niagara Falls, New York. She relocated with her family to Las Vegas in 1943 where her parents worked in restaurants. Hunt attended Las Vegas High School and went onto the Westlake College of Music in Los Angeles, California. In 1955, her family opened a popular pizzeria on Fremont Street. They also opened a restaurant on West Sahara in the 1960s.

Lorraine left the family business and began performing as a cabaret singer in Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Las Vegas. She was successful and used some of her earnings to invest in real estate in Las Vegas at the young age of nineteen. In 1968, she married a fellow performer “Blackie” Hunt. In 1972, Lorraine and Blackie Hunt opened the Bootlegger Restaurant in Las Vegas on land Lorraine had previously purchased. The Bootlegger became a landmark as it gained a following with Las Vegas strip entertainers.

After years as a local businesswoman, Hunt entered local politics. She was elected to the Clark County Commission in 1994. She was also became the first woman to chair the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. In 1998, Hunt ran for state-wide office and was elected Lieutenant Governor as a Republican. She won reelection in 2002. During her tenure as lieutenant governor, Hunt promoted tourism to Nevada and focused on increased economic development of the state. In 2006, Hunt sought the state’s highest office, governor, but was defeated in the Republican primary.</text>

<text>Alice Ward Boyer arrived in Las Vegas from Oklahoma in 1937. Her brother and former husband came earlier to escape the dustbowl depression and get settled. In the middle of the summer, just at dusk, she emerged from the train at Kingman, Arizona with her two small children to meet her family and drive through the darkness to her new home in Las Vegas.

Born in rural Oklahoma, she spent her early years on a ranch. Alice graduated from high school just as the Great Depression began and worked briefly at a newspaper before marriage.

Her recollections revive the older Las Vegas when community life characterized the small town. At the heart of her story is the Mesquite Club. The non-partisan civic activities of the Mesquite Club are part of a national history of women’s club voluntarism in the nineteenth and twentieth century United States. Founded in 1911, this pioneer Las Vegas women’s club played an essential role in the development of the growing town.

Alice Boyer joined the Mesquite club in 1944. She first served as the chair of the Garden Committee, then “went right up through the chairs,” and was elected President of the club for 1958-59. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Alice Boyer died February 16, 2008 in Pennsylvania at 94 years old.</text>

<text>Jackie Brantley, born in Las Vegas following World War II, grew up in the Westside at a time when the predominately black area of the city was at its peak. Her family moved to Las Vegas for better opportunities and Brantley has spent her entire life in Las Vegas. She attended the Westside Elementary School and graduated from Rancho High School. Following her graduation, she began working as a maid, but quit after six months to marry. She then worked for the Clark County School District as a secretary until she gave birth to her son in 1974. Brantley soon took a job at the Desert Inn in publicity. She worked with many of the entertainers that performed at the resort. She also formed a friendship with Alex Haley during this time. In 1978, Brantley left the Desert Inn to take care of her son and aging mother. Brantley returned to the Westside and worked with the Nucleus Associates who were building a shopping center in the area. She also did some modeling work. Later, she went to work for the Department of Motor Vehicles. Brantley’s narrative contains a description of her varied work history, from housekeeping to mid-management public relations. Recognizing value in all types of labor, she believes her first job as a maid instilled a sense of pride in maintaining a clean home. Jackie Brantley still believes that her beloved Westside continues to be the “heart of the city.”</text>

<text>Mitzi Stauffer was raised in Bay Area, an only child and the heir to the Stauffer Chemicals fortune. She attended Stanford University, where she studied philosophy, psychology and education. After three years of college, she left to marry her professor, a scientist. For years she worked with him doing his research in Northern Nevada. At 21, she lost her family and used her inheritance to begin investing in real estate. She had a natural aptitude for this investing and established herself as a shrewd businesswoman. She was drawn to Las Vegas by the potential profit that gaming ventures represented. She was approached about a business venture at the Tropicana Casino, and became the majority owner in 1975. As acting director of the Tropicana Hotel Corporation, Briggs added a twenty-two story hotel and oversaw many other significant renovations and expansions to the casino. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to Briggs, some of the other investors in the casino were operating a skimming operation at the direction of an East Coast-based organized crime syndicate. When the operation came to light, Briggs was forced to sell the Tropicana, and the Ramada Inn corporation purchased the property. Briggs was a talented and successful businesswoman whose losses at the Tropicana are sadly representative of the era when Las Vegas was tainted by ties to organized crime. After losing the Tropicana, Briggs turned to her religion for solace and guidance. She has spent the last several years working for the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer, assisting the priests with weekly services and working as a salesperson in the gift shop.</text>

<text>Eileen B. Brookman served her community as an assemblywoman, activist, and businesswoman. She was involved with the American Business Women’s Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Women’s Democratic Club, while working for issues such as the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), Native American rights, and senior citizen rights.

Eileen Milstein was born in Denver, Colorado, on October 25, 1921. She married George Brookman on July 11, 1941 and the couple moved to Las Vegas after having two children together. Brookman entered Nevada state politics in 1962 when Governor Grant Sawyer appointed her as the Indian Commissioner. She became a Nevada State Assemblywoman in 1965 and served until 1977.

Due to her short stature (4’10”), Brookman wore orange everyday to make her visible in the legislature. This color became her signature, adorning campaign materials and became a recognizable color in District 9 even after she was no longer in office. She ended her voluntary retirement from the legislature by winning election to her seventh term in 1986 and was reelected in 1988.

During her 16 years in the legislature, Brookman served on the Government Affairs Committee, Health and Welfare Committee, and Education Committee, and was the vice-chairman of the Legislative Functions Committee. She also served as vice-chairman of the Assembly Waysand Means Committee. Brookman was a consistent supporter of legislation to establish and improve senior citizen programs, handicap programs, and juvenile justice services. Brookman sponsored the Older Americans Act that brought necessary funding to Nevada for senior citizen benefits, including the creation of the State Division of Aging Services and the “Meals on Wheels” program. During the 1975 Legislative Session she introduced a bill to eliminate pay toilets, which then became a national issue. Women shouldered the majority of pay toilet fees as men used stalls much less frequently.

Brookman was recognized for her dedication to individual rights and her commitment to her community. She was named Humanitarian Mother of the Year for Clark County in 1974, Woman of the Year by the City of Hope and was chairman of the Nevada delegation to the White House Conference on Aging in 1982. As a result of that position, Brookman was appointed to the Nevada Commission on Aging. She was awarded the Nevada Distinguished Citizen Award from the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada in 1982, and was appointed to the State Taxicab Authority the same year.

Brookman died of cancer on July 1, 2004</text>

<text>In 1953 Lucille Bryant travelled to Las Vegas by car from Tallulah, Louisiana to seek the higher wages and better working conditions. She made the Westside of Las Vegas her home and worked in several casinos. She retired from the Stardust after working there for 31 years.

Lucille Bryant’s paternal grandmother raised her following her mother’s death. Her father joined the service during World War II, and after he returned to the United States, he moved west, eventually settling in Palmdale, California, leaving Lucille and her siblings in Louisiana. Lucille married at the age of sixteen, worked as a domestic for white families in Tallulah, and spent her summers working in cotton fields.

Bryant’s husband moved to Las Vegas first, and she joined him six months later. In Las Vegas, they settled on the Westside, joining other relatives and neighbors from Tallulah who had immigrated to the area earlier. She got a job on her first day in Las Vegas, working as a maid at the Algiers Hotel. She went on to work at the Silver Slipper and the Sands. Bryant later began working in the uniform room at the Las Vegas Sands, where she worked for 31 ones years. She also became active in the Culinary Union.

She raised her children in Las Vegas and was active in their educations. She also furthered her own education after they grew, and earned her degree. Bryant was active in her church.

The interview describes Bryant’s experiences working in Las Vegas hotels, the community of the Westside, and the education of her children</text>

<text>Barbara Buckley currently serves as the executive director of Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada. She also served in the Nevada State Assembly where she was the first female Majority Floor Leader.

Buckley was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She moved to Las Vegas in the early 1980s and found work as a maid and waitress in hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. She attended UNLV where she earned her bachelor’s degree with honors. She then graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona law school.

In 1989, Buckley became a staff attorney with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada. She ran for statewide office in 1994 and voters elected her to the first of nine sessions in the Nevada Assembly. There she worked to protect the rights of renters and homeowners, advocated for women and children, and reformed the education system in Nevada by helping to implement full-day kindergarten. She was elected Majority Floor Leader by her fellow Democrats in the 2001, 2003, and 2005 sessions. In 2007, she was elected to be Speaker of the Assembly, the first woman to hold that role.

She has continued to work at the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and since 1996 has been the executive director. She has received many awards from the community including Democrat of the Year (2003), Assemblywoman of the Year (2007) UNLV Alumni of the Year (2007), and Legislator of the Decade. In her work at the Legal Aid Center, she developed partnerships with UNLV Boyd School of Law to train first year law students how to teach legal classes to the public, as well as a Domestic Violence Project and a Children’s Attorneys Project.</text>

<text>Betty Bunch began dancing professionally as a college student while earning her degree in dance from the University of Texas. She soon began working with the Moro-Landis dancers and made her home in Los Angeles. She danced in the evenings, and worked on movies during the day.

In 1956, Bunch landed her first job in Las Vegas at the Sahara Hotel as part of the opening line for Donald O’Connor. After that show closed, she returned to Los Angeles, where she made her permanent home. She went on the road with Louis Prima and other shows.

After one show closed, Bunch came to Las Vegas to vacation. While waiting for her ride back to Los Angeles in a coffee shop, she was offered a position at a show in Las Vegas, and she decided to move permanently to Las Vegas.

She continued to dance, sing, and do comedy until after the birth of her second child. At that time, she retired from the Las Vegas showroom, but not from show business. She continues to be involved in the entertainment industry in Las Vegas.</text>
